You remember that the Indicative mood sign is the mood of reality: it expresses the objective truth.

The subjunctive mood is the mood of unreality or reality seen through the emotions and value judgments of a person.

Para expresar probabilidad:

Quizás estudie todos los días.
Tal vez llegue a tiempo

Para expresar un deseo o exhortación.

¡Que tengas buen viaje!
¡Ojalá Carlitos salga bien en el examen!
¡Que pases feliz cumpleaños!

En las oraciones que expresan un juicio de valor o obligación personal.

Es absurdo que lo vendas.
Es importante que terminemos a tiempo.

En las oraciones subordinadas, cuando el verbo principal influye sobre el verbo subordinado. Estos verbos pueden expresar: deseos, dudas, órdenes, consejos y reacciones emotivas.

Cuando el verbo de la oración subordinada expresa una acción no realizada. Con las conjunciones y locuciones: cuando, apenas, después (de) que, en cuanto, hasta que, mientras, tan pronto como, etc.

A teacher abroad: a testimonial

I chose the country of my internship abroad because of the language (among other things), my mother tongue is Spanish and I wanted to learn different languages, my choice was among French and Portuguese, the two I love. I finally chose to go to Brazil.

While being there, on my first day at work I didn’t understand anything of what my boss was speaking. The first two weeks the mental effort to understand and talk Portuguese ended up exhausting me at the end of the day. I was language lost for some weeks.

I had traveled before, but in this exchange I understood what it means to be an intern who works in another country without speaking the native language (In an ONG, not Spanish at all).The effort made to interact with local people, understand new ways, to adapt to them, do a good job in this new culture. At times I thought these exchanges were part of a 'Master Plan' for the interns to see things they wouldn't see in their home town because being inside, you're part of it, immersed in the same things and the usual routine …everything is normal. But running to another country, challenges people to go further, to question yourself, to self-establish new habits you to take away others, etc.

In my day to day in Brazil, I realized that it was sometimes difficult to carry on a conversation not knowing the linguistic conventions to answer a simple conversation in Brazil, I used to linger, to edit, etc... Many times I saw some european friends fighting this and I tried to help. For some reason they didn’t want to take Portuguese lessons.

Being abroad you can make many friends. Speaking the language plays an important role in reaching out to local people, but sometimes the language can also get away from the culture. Not speaking properly or feeling insecure makes the communication not flowing and ends up in a switch to English (the most common language) or a switch to be with those who do speak the same language. This, in the short term, will push away foreigner from the riches that the exchange experience offers.

When I had to leave, I already had a better Portuguese, but I wasn't going to use it much. I was eager to return to start a new experience having my new learnt language as an advantage on my side.

For me, the significance of the exchange is the apprenticeship and what you do with it, the more it hits others, the better. I write this post and I will continue to help my students making an incredible experience of their own in my country, Peru.

En el Perú, uno de los idiomas oficiales es el Español, hablado por el 70% de la población. El Español o Castellano es, tras el chino mandarín, la lengua más hablada del mundo (por el número de personas que la tienen como lengua materna) y uno de los seis idiomas oficiales de la ONU.

Es el idioma oficial de 21 países, la mayoría de los cuales está en el continente americano. Son alrededor de 18 los países en los que no es oficial (más de 100.000 personas) y alrededor de 8 países en los que no es oficial, pero es hablado por más del 10% de la población

Es el segundo idioma más estudiado en el mundo, después del Inglés, con por lo menos 17,8 millones de estudiantes (aunque otros estudios indican 46 millones de estudiantes en el mundo distribuidos en 90 países).

A pesar de que España esté tan distante de los demás países donde se habla Español, y a pesar de la larga data, hasta ahora existe una uniformidad en el idioma que permite a las gentes de uno u otro lado del Atlántico entenderse con relativa facilidad.

Las mayores diferencias entre los países de habla hispana se dan en la entonación y en las formas de hablar, que varían según países o ciudades. Sin embargo, la ortografía y la normativa lingüística aseguran la uniformidad de la lengua; por la dimensión que ha alcanzado la lengua castellana, existe la necesidad de colaboración entre las diversas Academias de la Lengua para preservar la unidad y riqueza de nuestro idioma.

Hoy, 23 de abril, celebramos el día Mundial del Idioma Español,en honor al notable escritor español Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, para recordar la gran responsabilidad que tenemos de preservar y difundir el idioma donde quiera que nos encontremos.

April, 13th. Spanish World Day

In Peru, Spanish is one of the official languages, spoken by 70% of the population. Spanish or Castilian is, after Mandarin Chinese, the most spoken language in the world (by the number of native speakers) and one of the six official languages of the UN. It is the official language of 21 countries, most of which are in the Americas.

There are about 18 countries in which it is not official (over 100,000 speakers) and about 8 countries in which it is not official, but is spoken by over 10% of the population. It is the second most studied language in the world after English, with at least 17.8 million students (although other studies indicate 46 million students in the world, distributed in 90 countries).

Although Spain is far from the other countries where Spanish is spoken, and despite the long-standing, so far there is uniformity in the language that allows people of either side of the Atlantic understand with relative ease.

The biggest differences between speaking countries are given in the intonation and the different ways of speaking that vary between countries and cities. However, spelling and language rules ensure uniformity of language; because of the dimension that the Castilian language has reached, there is need for collaboration between the various language academies to preserve the unity and richness of our language.

Today, April, 23th, we celebrate Spanish World Day, in honor to the outstanding Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, to remind the great responsibility we have to preserve and spread the language wherever we are.

What to do around Lima? / ¿Qué hacer cerca a Lima?

What's up! The holidays arrived and you don't know yet what to do to spend a super weekend around Lima, Peru? Don't panic! Here is a list of cool options for short trips. Remember, while in Peru, you can always get the chance to speak Spanish!, people here would be more than happy to share our culture with you and help you out if you needed some assistance getting around.

What to do near Lima?

Visit Cañete (only 2 - 4 hours from Lima): Mala's Valley, Lunahuaná.

You can do some treeking around and some rafting.

Visit Santa Eulalia, in Huarochirí (only 1 hour from Lima): San Juan de Iris, go to a resort

Here you can visit "Little Machupicchu", as they call this inca city, or you can go to a resort and enjoy being surrounded by nature and a nice weather.

Visit Canta (only 3 hours from Lima): Santa Rosa de Quives, Canta and Obrajillo.

You can do some trekking, ride a horse while enjoying the natural view and have some delicious traditional food.

Visit Caral (only 4 hours from Lima) where you can find one of the most ancient cities in America and an archeological paradise close to Lima.
